This census is a good example of how these documents can help further research, or at least give good leads. Two names down from Teman is a Rachel Griffin listed as 62 years old with several children. Could Rachel be Teman's mother? Often on censuses, of-age sons who are married with their own households will be listed next to or a few names away from their parents. Although this is not proof of Teman's parentage, it is a good start. I then knew to look on the 1850 Census for a Rachel with these children and additionally Teman. If her husband were alive 10 years earlier to this census, he would also appear on the 1850 census, thus supplying me with Teman's parents names, age in 1850 and his siblings' information as well.
