6/6/11
In his book "The Root Family 1600-1870", James Pierce Root writes: Thomas Roote believed to be the son of John Roote and Ann Russell, of Badby, England, came to this country about the year 1637, and was among the first settlers in Hartford, Ct., where he lived many years, and where his children were born, although on account of the incompleteness of the ancient records of Hartford, the birth of only one of them, John, is recorded. This Thomas Roote is to be distinguished from the Thomas Rootes who was a resident of Salem, Mass., about the same period, and who remained there until his death. "Thomas Roote, (probably this settler of Hartford) went to Pequot in 1637, as a soldier," says Hon. R. H. Hinman. The name of Thos. Roote is mentioned in the list of proprietors of undivided lands in 1639, and may be found on the monument in the old grave-yard in Hartford, in the rear of the Center Church, erected by the Ancient Burial Ground Association in memory of the first settlers of the city. He was a considerable landholder there, and one parcel of the land assigned to him was located on what is now North Main street, about a mile west of the State House. After a residence of about fifteen years in Hartford he removed with his six sons and one daughter, and settled in Northampton, Mass., on the 9th day of May, 1654, as one of the planters of what was then called Nonotuck.* In the Massachusetts Colonial Documents we find that in 1659, on petition, he was appointed one of the selectman. He was both farmer and weaver of cloth. His record of lands assigned him by the town is dated 7th Dec., 1659. On the 18th of June, 1661, the parish church was gathered, and the Rev. Eleazar Mather was ordained as pastor and teacher of the flock. Among the eight pillars of the church thus organized was Thomas Roote. It is believed by some that he was a deacon of the church. The old Root homestead in Northanmpton was on King Street, opposite where the Roman Catholic Church now stands, and it has only within a few years been torn down. Thomas Roote died at a very advanced age, on the 17th of July 1694, about 89, naming his children in his will, and mentioning that he lived with his son Jonathan at the old homestead. The name of Thomas Roots's wife is not known.
*The petition showing the high motives and aims which actuated the new settlers of Northampton, was addressed to the General Court of Mass., as follows: "To the Right Worshipful Governor and the Worshipful Magistrates, Assistants, and Deputies of this much honored court -- your humble petitioners being fully persuaded of your former promptness and pious endeavors to begin and settle Plantations in such places, as appeared convenient within the liberty of your jurisdiction and Patent for the further enlarging of the territories of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the common utility of the Common Seal are therefore emboldened to present these few lines to your judicious consideration and their request therein that you would be pleased to give and grant Liberty to your Petitioners, whose names are subscribed, and such as shall join with them, according to your wonted clemency, power, right, and authority, from, by and under you to plant, possess and inhabit the place, being on the Conetiquot River, about Springfield, called Nonotuck, as their own inheritance, according to their divisions by estate, and to carry on the affairs of the place by erecting a town there, to be governed according to the laws, directions and instructions they shall receive from you. Your Petitioners having some knowledge of the place by reason of the propinquity of our habitation to be a place, desirable to erect a town in for the furtherance of the public weal, by providing corn and raising cattle not only for thier own, but likewise for the good of others -- the propagating of the gospel -- the place promising in an ordinary way of God's Providence a comfortable subsistence, whereby people my live, and attend upon God in his holy ordinances without distraction. So committing you to the Guidance of the Mighty Counselor, we rest your humble Petitioners -- Edward Elmore, Richard Smith, John Gilbert, Wm. Miller, John Allen, Richard Wakley, Thomas Burnham, Matthias Foote, Thomase Roote, William Clark, Joseph Smith, John Stedman, etc, etc. Dated May 6 1653. Granted by the Court May 18, 1653." Probably only eight of these petitioners settled in Northampton (from 1654 to 1658), and among these eight was Thomas Roote from Hartford.

The Dexter Family Bible lists Elizabeth Root’s birth place as Ware, MA. The town clerk in Ware confirmed in an email dated 8/25/09, no record of Elizabeth’s birth. So, I’ve left it as Ware.
